It was close to the end of high school when Po realised that most things in life are dull when compared to making music.
This unshakeable yearning compelled him to pursue music study at Monash University and the University of Melbourne, and ultimately the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM), learning under Timothy Young, Paavali Jumppanen, Michael Kieran Harvey, Kristian Chong, Aura Go, and Kenji Fujimura.
Po received multiple awards at ANAM and Monash University, including the Sir John Monash Scholarship for Excellence, and support from ADFAS, Gwen Nisbet Music Scholarship, Anna Chmiel Memorial Fund, Joan Earle and Bernie’s Music Land. He found what would be his third concerto opportunity with the Monash Academy Orchestra under the baton of Jessica Cottis. Po graduated from the University of Melbourne with First Class Honours.
Recent highlights include an album release with Josh Taylor (piano works 2), concerto performances with the ANAM Orchestra and the South Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and performing with the Western Australia Symphony Orchestra in Mahler’s 8th Symphony.
An obsession for theatre brought him to the role of Musical Director for small theatre productions around Melbourne, most recently collaborating on a production of A Year with Frog and Toad with Beaumaris Theatre. In 2022, Po joined the Australian Contemporary Opera Company as a Young Artist Repetiteur, where he worked as both keyboardist in performances and repetiteur through the rehearsal process. Not limited to the pit, he also found himself on stage originating the role of ex-virtuoso concert pianist Xiao-Jun in La Mama Mobile's chamber opera The Gang of Five, written by Noel Fidge.
As a teacher, Po has worked at Melbourne High School and South Oakleigh Secondary College, and continues to maintain a limited studio at his home in Mount Waverley. He also regularly plays piano and conducts for Yarra Gospel Choir, and sings with Voices of Asia Chamber Choir. He is regularly sought out for accompaniment for AMEB exams, university concerts and scholarship auditions.
